Respiratory Conditions Physiotherapy

As all physiotherapists working in our clinic are Chartered Physiotherapists, they are all qualified to treat a number of respiratory conditions

Current research shows that the Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT) is the Gold Standard treatment for most respiratory conditions. This is a technique performed by the patient and involves them using specific breathing techniques to loosen the secretions in the chest, cough effectively and so remove secretions from the lungs.

In Kilkenny Physiotherapy and Sports Injury clinic we will teach the patient this technique to help them clear secretions at home. It involves:

  • Deep breathing exercises where expansion of the chest and lungs is maximised.
  • Forced Expiratory Technique (FET) or ‘Huffing’ to clear secretions without strenuous coughing
  • Learning to control breathing to prevent tightness and wheezing.

In the clinic our Chartered Physiotherapists can also use Postural Drainage and Manual Therapy to help loosen secretions to aid the patient.

These techniques are suitable for patients with a number of respiratory conditions such as

  • Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease
  • Chest Infections

manual percussion to loosen secretions from the lungs

  • Bronchitis
  • Asthma
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Pneumonia
